Some scary news from the Independent, a UK newspaper.
A robot with a brain grown from human stem cells in China has started learning to control its arms. The brain, on a computer chip, has learned basic tasks, such as moving its limbs, avoiding obstacles, grasping objects, whilst apparently “exhibiting the intelligence of a normal biological brain.”
This travesty is being created by a team of scientists from Tianjin University and the Southern University of Science and Technology working together to fit the in-vitro brain with a brain-computer interface that allows it to interact with the outside world.
Ming Dong, an executive director at the lab, said, “The brain-computer interface on a chip is a technology that uses an in vitro cultured ‘brain’ – such as brain organoids – coupled with an electrode chip to achieve information interaction with the outside world through encoding and decoding and stimulation-feedback.”
They are apparently aiming to create hybrid machine-human intelligence, not at all scary. Particularly when you think that it’s something that will be like a human being’s brain stuck in this machine. God help us.

Meanwhile in Tokyo they have grafted living, human skin onto the face of a humanoid robot, to make it able to smile and display emotions.
It is not at all super creepy, like, think stomach-churningly disgusting.
Have a look at the video of it “smiling” from the Daily Mail:
Well, you can’t stop progress.
