Astroturf: Fake grass roots
Astroturf is when political, corporate or other special interest groups pretend to be grass roots by manipulating public opinion online: their goal is to make the majority think that their view is in the minority. It is a prevalent form of manipulation in the media. If you listened to or read most mainstream media coverage of the issue of the Washington Redskins name change you would think that most Americans wanted the name to be changed, but in fact 71% of Americans think that the “Redskins”name should not be changed.
Udo Ulfkotte talks about intelligence agencies providing articles for him to publish, and he signed his name to them. “Do you really think this is journalism? Intelligence agencies writing articles?” For 17 years Udo was a journalist with one of the most prestigious newspapers in Germany, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Udo has written a book entitled, “Gekaufte Journalisten”, Bought Journalists, in which he exposes the hidden influences on journalists and the corrupt way the industry works. According to the Amazon blurb, the English edition, “Presstitutes Embedded in the Pay of the CIA: A Confession from the Profession,” was suppressed for three years under the name “Bought Journalists”, before they managed to publish it.
This video features Udo talking about the way journalists are corrupted and Sharyl Atkinson describing what Astroturf is.
