Fact check: Western Governments are tracking us via web cookies.
A new study indicates that they are.
A new study, Measuring Web Cookies in Governmental Websites, delivered as part of an international symposium WebSci '22: 14th ACM Web Science Conference 2022, Barcelona, Spain, June 2022, has found that many Governments that have rules for privacy, are not following these rules. Web cookies are small computer apps, really, that gather data on users and return it to the website.
The authors of the study discovered that web cookies are delivered in government websites, and that they include cross-site tracking cookies, that allow the owners of the website to find out what else you’re doing on the internet.
Their research is quite comprehensive and measures the numbers of websites and cookies delivered, and the types of cookies, on various countries in the G20 nations.
Australia is right up there, really, with the best (<sarc>). They particularly single out Australia, actually, for having privacy laws that are supposed to prohibit this sort of thing.
