Romans 12:19-21
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
God is saying here that we don’t have to take revenge, but that if we have been wronged, He promises to take revenge on our behalf.
We don’t need to feel aggrieved for anything anyone has done to us - even for what governments have done to us. This verse implies that finally, God will deliver our enemies, that is, those who have wronged us, into our hands, and that we will have the opportunity to take revenge, an opportunity that we will have the power to overlook at that time, in order that we mayovercome evil with good.
God is telling us at that time not to take revenge - because if they are without food, that means God has already avenged the wrong we suffered.
Being overcome with evil, means, becoming evil.
Overcoming evil with good, means showing undeserved kindness, grace and forgiveness, because, remember, this is what God has shown to us in Jesus, in forgiving our sins.
For God sent Jesus to die not only for our sins, “but for the sins of the whole world”. (1 John 2:2)
Listen to God in silence and wait on Him and He will make this clear to you, if it’s not already.
